History

The use of Lavender has been documented for over 2500 years. The ancient Egyptians used lavender in the mummification process and in perfume. Romans used lavender oils for cooking, bathing and scenting the air. The name is believed to be derived from the Latin verb lavare—which means, “to wash.” The Romans also used lavender oil in soaps. In Medieval and Renaissance France, women who took in washing were known as “lavenders.” Clothes were washed in lavender and laid to dry on lavender bushes. In Roman times it was used to help heal wounds and burns. The Ancient Greeks used lavender to help with insomnia and muscular aches and pains.

Lavender is also mentioned in the Bible, when Mary anointed Jesus” feet with spikenard (a Variety of Lavender). In the 16th Century glove makers would perfume their gloves with Lavender, it was noted that they did not contract cholera and so it was used again I the 17th century as a remedy for the Plague in London. It was in the 19th century that English Lavender became popular and both Queen Elizabeth & Victoria were reported to have used it.

The popularity of lavender soon caught on in the Americas and it is reported that the Shakers were the 1st to grow Lavender commercially.
